A 15-week collaborative studio built upon the 4-month design research of motivation and self-efficacy in young adults for self-development. ai.ly was created as an AI companion tool to assist users in achieving their goals, overcoming challenges, and developing potential. Through the design thinking process, the project mainly focuses on the job interview process as the MVP.

Problem Statement

How do we help job applicants overcome obstacles and stay motivated to achieve their career goals?

Young professionals and college graduates encounter challenges in the competitive job market, navigating a complex and often overwhelming application process that can lead to discouragement and mental health issues due to frequent rejection. While self-motivation is crucial for success, it necessitates support to overcome barriers. The interview stage is pivotal, demanding thorough preparation and practice to enhance the likelihood of success in the job application process.

Research

Through the process of design thinking. ai.ly was derived from 4-month of design research on self-motivation to self-actualization.

Findings

The research discovered 3-pillar goals that people wish to improve as the goals that lead them to self-actualization: healthy, wealthy, and wise.

However, five factors hinder achieving these goals: mindsets, support systems, time, habits, and metrics.


Ideation

Initial Concept

The support system tool helps people achieve 3 pillars of goals. The primary role of ai.ly is to help users stay motivated and improve self-efficacy through positive psychology.

The team leveraged barriers to address habit and mindset changes by creating a support system with metrics, aiding users in goal achievement and time management, and assisting with AI technology.

Conducting further research to provide the directional method, the team discovered motivational interviewing, a technique that facilitates mindset shifts and positive behavior development, which became integral to the core concept of ai.ly.


Concept Development

It was challenging for the ai.ly concept to tackle all three pillars of goals simultaneously within the given timeframe, which prompted the team to narrow and focus on a specific goal.

Focusing on this niche area allows the team to see the deliverable of the concept, but there are also further opportunities and potential for career skill enhancement and development that expand from job interview preparation to broader horizons.

Methodology of Self-efficacy and Stay Motivated of ai.ly

Positive Psychology

Incorporates the principles of motivational interviewing, the O.A.R.S. framework from positive psychology. By leveraging this approach, ai.ly aims to maintain, improve, and increase users' self-efficacy, the belief in one's capability to achieve goals. The platform's design, based on O.A.R.S., ensures that users remain motivated and resilient throughout the job-hunting process, which can be riddled with challenges and setbacks.

Prototyping

This stage ensures the ai.ly concept's feasibility, desirability, and viability. We prototyped testing the AI technology interaction, voice-based interaction, and tracking, rewarding, and reminding systems.

Workshop

The workshop provided medium-fidelity prototyping simulating the voice-based interaction with ai.ly and walked through the journey and rewarding options.

Feedback

The overall feedback presents that ai.ly enhances users in the job interview process, motivates users, and demonstrates its value. However, 2 key areas need of improvement

Users want other forms of rewarding

  • Rewards are more centered around jobs and job interviews, so external partnerships with job-related platforms are key.

  • Recommendations for providing soft-skills training certificates after completing the AI.ly assessment would be more fruitful to interviewees as they can share it with other platforms.

Improvement on the Dashboard UI

  • The UI of the dashboard seemed a little busy for the users; therefore, the navigation was not seamless. The UI journey of the dashboard can be improved.


Iteration

We took the feedback and made the adjustment to the reward system, in which the incentivize element changed from point redemption for partnership products/services benefits to getting certified for soft skills abilities progress. This change makes the user experience more lean and streamlined.
